Business Process Simulation: A Systematic Literature Review
Business process simulation marks an essential Business Process Management technique for analysing business processes and for reasoning about process improvement. Despite its importance, literature is lacking a comprehensive, updated overview of research contributions to the field of business process simulation. In this systematic literature review, we assess the present state of research on business process simulation including prior work between 1990 and 2016. Results reported in the present study assist in advancing the discussion on future research on business process simulation by compiling and analysing prior work. The present literature review focuses on prior research involving conceptual business process models, e.g., BPMN models, with a graphical model representation as a starting point for business process simulation and excludes other foundations to build simulation models
A browser-based modeling tool for studying the learning of conceptual modeling based on a multi-modal data collection approach
How do we learn conceptual modeling? What are common learning difficulties? Which tool support assists learners in what respect? The paper at hand reports on the design and development of a browser-based modeling tool integrated with a learning observatory in support of learning conceptual modeling and of studying the learning of conceptual modeling. Implementing a multimodal data collection approach, the learning observatory tracks learner-tool interactions, records verbal data from learners and surveys learners about their learning processes to provide for analyses at the individual and aggregate learner levels in the quest for identifying patterns of learning processes, learning barriers and difficulties. We report on the current state of prototype development, discuss its software architecture and outline future development steps
Intensity Dependent Photoluminescence Imaging for InâLine Quality Control of Perovskite Thin Film Processing
Large area fabrication of high-quality polycrystalline perovskite thin filmsremains one of the key challenges for the commercial readiness of perovskitephotovoltaic (PV). To enable high-throughput and high-yield processing, reliable and fast in-line characterization methods are required. The presentwork reports on a non-invasive characterization technique based onintensity-dependent photoluminescence (PL) imaging. The change in PLintensity as a function of excitation power density can be approximated by apower-law with exponent k, which is a useful quality indicator for theperovskite layer, providing information about the relative magnitudes ofradiative and non-radiative recombination. By evaluating k-parameter mapsinstead of more established PL intensity images, 2D information is obtainedthat is robust to optically induced artifacts such as intensity variations inexcitation and reflection. Application to various half stacks of a perovskitesolar cell showcase its ability to determine the importance of the interfacebetween the charge transporting and perovskite layers. In addition, thek-parameter correlates to the bulk passivation concentration, enabling rapidassessment of open-circuit voltage variations in the range of 20 mV.Considering expected improvements in data acquisition speed, the presentedk-imaging method will possibly be obtained in real-time, providing large-areaquality control in industrial-scale perovskite PV production

Pitfalls in assessing stromal tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) in breast cancer
Abstract: Stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) are important prognostic and predictive biomarkers in triple-negative (TNBC) and HER2-positive breast cancer. Incorporating sTILs into clinical practice necessitates reproducible assessment. Previously developed standardized scoring guidelines have been widely embraced by the clinical and research communities. We evaluated sources of variability in sTIL assessment by pathologists in three previous sTIL ring studies. We identify common challenges and evaluate impact of discrepancies on outcome estimates in early TNBC using a newly-developed prognostic tool. Discordant sTIL assessment is driven by heterogeneity in lymphocyte distribution. Additional factors include: technical slide-related issues; scoring outside the tumor boundary; tumors with minimal assessable stroma; including lymphocytes associated with other structures; and including other inflammatory cells. Small variations in sTIL assessment modestly alter risk estimation in early TNBC but have the potential to affect treatment selection if cutpoints are employed. Scoring and averaging multiple areas, as well as use of reference images, improve consistency of sTIL evaluation. Moreover, to assist in avoiding the pitfalls identified in this analysis, we developed an educational resource available at www.tilsinbreastcancer.org/pitfalls

This recognition has come about thanks to standardized visual reporting guidelines, which helped to reduce inter-reader variability. Now, there are ripe opportunities to employ computational methods that extract spatio-morphologic predictive features, enabling computer-aided diagnostics. We detail the benefits of computational TILs assessment, the readiness of TILs scoring for computational assessment, and outline considerations for overcoming key barriers to clinical translation in this arena. Specifically, we discuss: 1. ensuring computational workflows closely capture visual guidelines and standards; 2. challenges and thoughts standards for assessment of algorithms including training, preanalytical, analytical, and clinical validation; 3. perspectives on how to realize the potential of machine learning models and to overcome the perceptual and practical limits of visual scoring

Application of a risk-management framework for integration of stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in clinical trials
Funder: Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF); doi: https://doi.org/10.13039/100001006Abstract: Stromal tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (sTILs) are a potential predictive biomarker for immunotherapy response in metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). To incorporate sTILs into clinical trials and diagnostics, reliable assessment is essential. In this review, we propose a new concept, namely the implementation of a risk-management framework that enables the use of sTILs as a stratification factor in clinical trials. We present the design of a biomarker risk-mitigation workflow that can be applied to any biomarker incorporation in clinical trials. We demonstrate the implementation of this concept using sTILs as an integral biomarker in a single-center phase II immunotherapy trial for metastatic TNBC (TONIC trial, NCT02499367), using this workflow to mitigate risks of suboptimal inclusion of sTILs in this specific trial. In this review, we demonstrate that a web-based scoring platform can mitigate potential risk factors when including sTILs in clinical trials, and we argue that this framework can be applied for any future biomarker-driven clinical trial setting
LEARNING CONCEPTUAL MODELING: STRUCTURING OVERVIEW, RESEARCH THEMES AND PATHS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH
Conceptual modeling marks an essential expertise for understanding and shaping the digital enterprise. Research on learning and, correspondingly, teaching conceptual modeling forms a diverse body of knowledge involving foci on various learning theories and approaches, learning outcomes and barriers. This review of literature on learning and teaching conceptual modeling identifies prevalent and emerging research themes, and presents a structuring overview of contributions to the field. Based on a systematic and purposeful sampling of publications combining different search strategies, we compile and analyze 121 contributions published between 1986 and 2017 to initiate further discussion on framing the learning and teaching of conceptual modeling in the light of learning paradigms. Future research can draw upon the identified research themes and gaps to advance our knowledge on learning conceptual modeling
AUTOMATED ASSISTANCE FOR DATA MODELERS: A HEURISTICS-BASED NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSING APPROACH
Identifiers of model elements convey semantics of conceptual models essential to interpretation by human viewers, e.g., the identifier âCustomerâ labeling an entity type in an Entity-Relationship diagram. Devising meaningful and purposeful identifiers has proven a particular challenge for data modelers, and has repeatedly been observed among the most common difficulties learners of conceptual data modeling face. The Automated Assistant reported in this paper provides data modelers with modeling-time suggestions on identifying and signifying entity types, relationship types, and attributes with meaningful and expedient identifiers. Different from earlier approaches, the Automated Assistant implementation does not rely on fixed reference solutions for modeling tasks, and works with (m)any natural language descriptions of a universe of discourse. We report on the design artifact, the Automated Assistant, highlight two selected design iterations, demonstrate practical applications, and evaluate its performance in typical application cases
Business Process Simulation on Procedural Graphical Process Models
Business process simulation marks an essential technique for analyzing business processes and for reasoning about process improvement. With first contributions dating back to the mid-1990s, computerized business process simulation has been a continuing research focus and is widely acknowledged as foundational to Business Process Management research and practice. Reviewing contributions to the field published between 1990 and 2018, the authors assess the state of research on business process simulation and develop an organizing overview of research contributions discussing simulation approaches, tool support, results visualization, use context, application purposes, and adoption barriers. Findings inform future research on business process simulation by discussing paths for behavioral research on the use of business process simulation, user requirements, and adoption barriers as well as complementary paths for design science research addressing limitations of present approaches and simulation tool support
